2008 Opening Day
Opening day was a huge success for the kids this year.   With the threat of rain in the morning, we were worried, but thanks to the efforts of all who helped and the Howard County Recreations & Parks employees, the day turned out perfect.    The kids played their games, had their pictures taken and enjoyed the carnival & food.    Thank you to all who participated in making Opening Day 2008 a wonderful success.

  WESTERN HOWARD COUNTY FEVER 14U
 MARYLAND STATE CHAMPIONS

The Western Howard County Fever 14U softball team won the ASA Maryland State Championship on June 8 at Love Point Park on Kent Island.  The Fever lost its first game of double-elimination tournament play and had to win seven consecutive games to win the tournament.  The Fever beat the Maryland Chill, Churchville Lightning, the Champions, Maryland Stars, Frederick Heartbreakers and the Bayside Blues to win the coveted championship.  The Fever was led by the pitching of Haylie Goheen, Amanda Segrist and Ashton Maseth.  The trio combined to allow only 15 earned runs during the ten-game tournament.  The team’s hitting was led by Ali Braun (.533), Erica Makar (.500), Hannah Braun (.423) and Kylie Pritchard (8 RBI).  The Fever was led defensively by its outfield of Melanie Slayton, Stephanie McGowan and Allie James.  The team has won four tournament titles in three different states thus far this year. The Fever has qualified to play in three national events this summer: ASA Nationals in Midland, Texas, PONY Nationals in Cary, North Carolina, and the USSSA Nationals in Orlando, Florida. The team has a combined record of 33 – 7 for the year.

2008 - Winter Baseball Pitching Clinic

WHC teamed up with the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) to run the “First Annual Pitching Clinic.”  The clinic was designed as a teaching event for the younger kids with an emphasis on the fundamentals of pitching.  Thanks to Coach John Jancuska, and the UMBC players for their outstanding effort.
